Senga could only stare at the shining deck clenching his brush and bucket full of water. He was sure it wasn’t so clean the last time he looked at it.
He was also sure he didn’t peel the potatoes in the kitchen. He asked Nikaido if he did it, but just the sight of him sprawled on a hammock answered that no, he didn’t.
Senga asked Tsukada and Goseki, but they were both too busy with their duties and so were the others on board. He started to imagine there was a fairy helping him and felt grateful for it.
--
“I know you took it.” Fujigaya stood up in front of Kitayama, pointing his finger at him.
“I have no idea of what you’re talking about.”
“My rare leopard skin blanket! Where is it?” Fujigaya sounded upset.
Kitayama’s eyebrow tilted and he started walking away pretending this conversation was not happening.
“Why would you do that?” Fujigaya stopped him again.
“Exactly, why would I?”
“Something is wrong on this ship, I can tell.”
“Stop being paranoid, all is fine.”
But when Kitayama noticed his personal supplies of extra food were slowly reducing, he started wondering if maybe Fujigaya wasn’t right.
--
Totsuka couldn’t help but smile watching the crew’s confused faces whenever Hashimoto did something on the ship. He was the only one that knew he was on board, after all. Hashimoto was bored, that’s why he wandered around and completed other people’s tasks when they were sleeping. But Hashimoto just wanted to be a pirate, not a ghost on a pirate ship. It was time to introduce the crew to the idea of a new person on board.
“You could have said that earlier!” Kitayama said.
“If he doesn’t return my blanket he’ll keep the sharks some company.” Fujigaya frowned.
--
“Hasshi the bad luck charm?! Are you serious?!” Nikaido was outraged when he saw Hashimoto’s face coming out on the daylight.
“At least he’s not a ghost, Nika. Aren’t you happy?” Senga observed.
“Yes, but...”
“That is all bullshit! He is a pirate like us now and pirates can’t bring bad luck to a ship!” Kitayama yelled.
“I’m not sure it actually works that way...” Fujigaya whispered to Kawai just to get side-eyed by Kitayama.
“Me... a pirate?” Hashimoto asked hopeful.
“In training, yes. If you manage not to sink the ship you’ll be a fully fledged pirate!” Totsuka smiled.
--
“So this is how you shovel coal in the furnace to move the steam engine. Now try!” Tsukada wiped his forehead with the back of his gloved hand and passed the shovel to Hashimoto.
“Okay! I’ll show you what I can do!”
Hashimoto started working messily trying to throw as much coal as possible with every shovelful. Until he managed to throw the shovel itself in the fire.
“Look Hasshi, I’m really patient usually, but maybe you should go help in the kitchen after all.”
“Senga won’t let me. Just because I accidentally caused a fire. I also said sorry.”
