Doesn't it seem counter intuitive to elect a 78 year old man to this position when his forecomer died at 84?

No way, they want the church to be adaptable. This guy kicks it soon, and they can select a new one based on how things are in 5-10 years. Not that this guy reflects any grasp on the political realities of the world.

The church should not be adaptable. Moral values are not adaptable, nor are hedonistic pursuits any less hedonistic whether or not one man or another says they are or aren't, in this way the church, and especially the political structure are missing the point entirely.
