Not hungry on my lunch break, so I thought I'd do this...
Day 04 → Your favorite book
So this is an interesting one. I really love books, but I don't love literature. I read a lot, but I prefer to read non-fiction. When I read, it's usually for information or entertainment and if a book can't give me either of those, then it's useless to me.
So I've selected Maus by Art Spiegelman as my favorite book.
It's not so much that Maus is my favorite book, but it's the perfect kind of book for me. I'm a very visual person and for that reason graphic novels appeal to me. The combination of text and image in the book are extremely effective means of relaying the terrifying experiences that Spiegelman's father endured throughout the Holocaust. As far as subject matter goes, the Holocaust has always been something that could affect me like nothing else and this book elicits a lot of emotion from the reader. He captures his father's personality quite well and it's easy to get attached to the characters. The second part, chronicling his father's time in Auchwitz is particularly disturbing. I really appreciate seeing historical events through a variety of perspectives and I think Maus is a great example of a stylish and well done account of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust.
Also, this work paved the way for a number of graphic novels on topics that went beyond the normal comic book style storytelling and really elevated the graphic novel to a new status within literature as a whole. Without Maus, Marjane Satrapi would have never had a career. So, for the preceding reasons, I'd be likely to say that Maus is my favorite book.
