I think it is a huge challenge to figure out where to put one's energy. The friend I told you about in email who I had lunch with struggled with this too - but is so glad I accepted her request to read her vampire witch story. She too is hearing all the 'urban fantasy is glutted' stories but we decided her story doesn't really fit the urban fantasy genre and to heck with that, she needs to give it a go because damn it is good.
And you should too. LOL!
YA Fantasy is something I love the sound of. I wonder if I could turn my Niaya'a story that i want to revamp into first person into YA? She certainly fits the age etc. Hmmm.
Yea, it's definitely discouraging to keep hearing that UF is dead, but at some point you just have to ignore all that negativity. If your heart is in writing a vampire story, then write it and eff what anyone says. There will always be someone who wants to read your story.
I'm actually looking at making my dragon story a more YA/NA feel as well, but we'll see. That's a huge undertaking that will take a lot of time.
And yes! You can definitely do tarot on the internet -- email or Skype/FaceTime/Google Hangout if you want to see the cards being pulled. I have a pagan/tarot-ccentric blog on Tumblr were I do one card readings for people as a way to practice readings on other people.
