dw 08x01: deep breath

(Trying this again, my first attempt went horrible wrong...)

I was out of town for the weekend, so have only got around to watching the first episode.

I rather like Twelve so far. I am cautiously optimistic. Cautiously because it is a post-regeneration episode, after all. I am looking forward to how his and Clara’s relationship shakes out, though. I am one of those rare Clara fans; was my favorite of Eleven’s companions, I thought Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman had lovely chemistry, and my biggest sadness at Eleven being gone was losing that. I am sad if the rumors do end up being true and Jenna Coleman leaves at the Christmas special.

Speaking of Clara, her reaction to the regeneration just felt off. Out of all the companions the Doctor’s had, bar Romana, she’s the most prepared for it. I know knowing and actually experiencing it are two different things, but still. It felt more like it was there for Write Reasons rather than because it made sense for the character. But I loved her in this episode. So afraid when facing the clockwork man, and not afraid to show him that she’s afraid, reaching out for the Doctor because he has her back even though she’s not sure who he is anymore.

I like post-regeneration episodes, where the Doctor’s all loopy and still not quite settled into himself. I will admit that I did not like the consciously referencing that he’s seen his face before. I know that Moffat was doing that, but it just rubs me the wrong way. But Capaldi was great! His confusion as to who was who in the beginning! Bedrooms, what are bedrooms? Doors are boring, so he goes out the window! Trading his watch for clothes!

I like the Paternoster Gang, so they are always welcome.

However, I do not like the new opening. What the hell is that?
