As our move is getting closer, its time to start being serious on the other end. Here is what I know for sure ( Read more... )

We're gonna be neighbors! Well, 3.5 hours away by car neighbors, but still. Unfortunately my sphere of knowledge of pediatricians ends around Winchester VA. I do know that Children's National Hospital is an excellent children's hospital and a pediatrician associated with them would be my general recommendation.

Children's is a bit of a drive from my mom's in the suburbs. I'm actually looking for a practice a little be closer. Our pediatrician out here (who we love) in a GW alum and we are going to ask him for recommendations when we see him on Friday, but I also firmly believe in getting info from parents as well. That's how we found Dr. Chen.

Oh I wans't meaning to go to Children's itself, but most major children's hospitals have affiliated pediatric practices a good way out into the suburbs, up to several hours in some cases.

Re internet: stevemb & I have been pretty happy with Speakeasy.

Willing victims for a board game play group, to meet at least every other week (once a week would be best but I know that everyone has crazy schedules) that will involve occasional play test of games in development. Brent will need folks to try prototypes out on and it would be great to have a play group of about 6 people to really run paces. The play test would be open to anyone within the group who has a prototype to offer up.

Games Club of Maryland has a regular Friday evening session in Silver Spring. thelongshot, stevemb & I are regulars, so at least occasional rides are possible. Playtests have been enthusiastically enabled in the past.

I'll see what I can do about your other issues.

there's also dcgamenight
Also see chez_turtle. Good crowd, good games, and I never get there b/c they're out in Ashburn. But Bethesda is far farther West than I usually am...

Thanks! I'll look into both groups. I had forgotten about the Chez Turtle gaming parties. As I said in my response to starmalachite, we would rather run our group out of where ever we are living to make things easier on Ian but the Chez Turtle group might be a good compromise.

Re Internet: It looks like we are going with FiOS. Brent needs the connection to be better than the average home connection because he'll be using it for work and downloading a lot of hi quality graphics. And getting Mom's house wired for fibre optics is a selling point. The house isn't even cable ready now. katrinb and thelongshot seem to be happy with their FiOS service (at least they haven't complained in my hearing and I've asked) and so are our friends Cal & Lynne out here. And with phone, TV and Internet bundled we'd be paying about the same for the bundle as we are paying out here for the three services separately and we'll get long distance as part of the package, which we don't have out here ( ... )

Depending on what specific days of the week and what my gig/work/lesson schedule is, I'm available on many weekdays to help with moving things, plus I have dollies and a van. Bear in mind that I often wrangle large speaker cabinets and amplifiers for my living. If it's smaller than a piano, I can usually move it myself.

Also, the local SCA barony has weekly meetups both for fiber arts and for other Arts & Sciences.

3LF practice, BTW has moved to the Episcopal Church near UMD (where we've had a couple of Markland feasts- esp. Hastings, so you may have been there) on MONDAY nights in conjunction w/SCA Fighter practice.
The fighters give our band extra percussive oomph when our tunes and their blows are in sync!

Thanks Maug, we appreciate the offer of back, van and moving dollies! As soon as we have a firm move schedule, I'll let you know the details ( ... )

Oh, but of course you will be busy and there will be priorities.

I offer the info only so that *when* you wish to re-engage or occasionally engage, or even do the odd drivebyhi, that you are not starting back at square one. I've done big moves before and even a move back into a scene can be more annoyingly like starting over than picking up where you left off.

There is no pressure here, only information and invitation.

Depending on when you arrive, we may be available to help with moving furniture. Unfortunately, the first weekend in October is the FSGW Getaway (the local folk music retreat we attend every year) so we're out for that. Columbus Day weekend is much more open at the moment.

Obviously, I'm totally the wrong person to recommend Presbyterian churches. That being said, I'll toss in a plug for Saint Mark Presbyterian on Old Georgetown Road at I-270. They currently host the Institute of Musical Traditions Monday night folk concert series, which we occasionally attend. There's also Bradley Hills Presbyterian, noted for its long affiliation and space-sharing with the Bethesda Jewish Congregation. Both appear from their websites to be PCUSA ( ... )

Thanks for the info, Gary. Mom also recommended Bradley Hills Pres, as she'd been in their church for some ecumenical events while she was still working for the Episcopal church in Kensington. Brent had a look at both websites is interested in visiting the churches to see what they are like. We are hoping for better results in DC than we had out here, where it took him 2 years to find a church that suited.
