yesterday i saw this girl i know who has been deaf since she was born. a couple of months ago she had surgery where they implanted a device in her head that allows her to hear for the first time in her life

i didn't! i remembered i forgot to ask her that because i am very curious about it as well. her spoken english is really good, she just sounds like she has some minor speech impediment. you would never know she was deaf.
yeah, i know that my mom who sort of grew up without music or with very little of it in her life has very hard time with any pop. i myself found punk and hard core atrocious until i gave it a proper listen and identified melodies and such. it was a huge revelation for me.
That must be so weird. Especially now that we live in such a noisy world. Constant beeping blipping honking screeching. I hope the girl can cope! I wish her lots of luck.

i know! ever since i started thinking about all this i keep paying more attention to various sounds. i think we ignore about 95% of the sounds we hear as irrelevant. but that comes from years and years of training. hopefully she'll be able to get around all this much faster!
