Ouch. I had similar experiences with my second/third placements (we have three as standard) and came about as close to quitting the course as it's possible to get without signing the relevant form or whatever. Just about scraped through with a lot of support that finally came from the school after that point.
So, yeah, you're not the only one who finds it difficult. I had some pretty shit lessons in front of my uni tutor too, and it's painfully demoralising.
If you need money, one option may be to angle for some private tuition. Most of the firms don't technically employ you, so providing you can show them a valid CRB that's three years or less old, you don't even have to jump through that hoop. It's something I'm trying at the moment, though I lost my CRB from the PGCE year so I've had to apply for a new one.
Oh my dear, I'm sorry you're having such a rough time *hugs* Are you still in Exeter? We should get together for a comiseratory coffee, it's easy to get to from here :)
It's not paranoia when the universe is really out to get you. Have you thought about doing a postdoc, just as a temporary thing rather than on the road to academia? You'd probably still be clear of the worst of the fuss over research funding and you'd get to do the lab stuff without having to write another thesis at the end.
So your funding has ended and your course has? You have the paperwork that says that your funding PERIOD has ended? You are not tied into doing study hours? You are able and actively seeking full time employment? You can apply for Jobseekers. And if they reject you I will write your appeal application for you and contact the MP to chase it down. Also, once signed on for 13 weeks you can get help with mortgage interest. It's one option. Btw, don't claim online. It's horrible and painful and goes wrong as often as it goes right. If you're not officially on the books as a student, or listed as part time, as long as you can prove you would be able to take on full time work you should be able to claim. If you want to talk about it, let me know.
As for the other stuff - I'm sorry for all the shit that's piling on you.
