Okay, so now we’re onto one of the big ones (for s1 at least), we’ll see whether I end up having that much to say about it.
Babylon 5: 1x08: And the Sky Full of Stars
This is one of those episodes that makes me wonder how I would have reacted too it if I didn’t already know the answers to all the questions it poses. If you’re seeing it for the first time, what’s to stop you from assuming Jeff is a sleeper agent or something? What would you make of Delenn’s involvement? Would you need reminding that this predates Inception by a good 15 years?
It’s still a pretty good piece of TV when you know the answers, but I tend to think I missed out on something of the early mysteries by in after they’d been resolved.
Hmm, you know I do sometimes have a problem with limited plot/characters episodes where there’s just not that much I find to say. Especially for an episode like this that’s about raising question we will get the answers to down the road. I think for a newbie this episode could prompt a lot of theorizing and wild speculation and question what we know and what we think we know, but on rewatch it just something to be enjoyed and appreciated instead of baffled by. (This is why I try and watch with newbies from time to time and see what reaction it gets with fresh eyes, I’ve just never been able to see that kind of project through.)
This episode is overtly important in a way not many, if any, of the episodes so far have been There’s been a lot of important stuff in other episodes but this is a lot more obvious about it than the others have been. We know that the Sinclair mystery is important and this is the first real step taken towards answering the questions about what happened to him. It’s mainly about concreting the questions, though what answers it gives raise a lot more than they resolve. It makes me wonder if I was watching this now I’d have any faith in getting actual answers because shows since B5 have jaded me a bit on stories actually answering their questions (but still, I cut my fannish teeth on this show so I always remember that it is possible for it to happen, which I think is why I’m always so let down by shows since then that don’t actually do it).
So yeah, if anyone has any good stories about watching this unspoiled (you or a friend, back in the day or more recent) I’d love to hear about it. As is, I’m going to end up keeping this kind of short because I just don’t have a lot to say.
Next time:
Hmm, today isn’t turning into a great review day, but I may keep going, we’ll see.
