BFA: Thicker than Water

I've spent the last two days listening to Thicker than Water while running errands, and I really, really loved it. An intriguing plot combined with exciting adventure = win in my book. I got to the surprise guest star (hereafter refered to as SGS) this afternoon while walking back from Sarah's school, and SGS turned my love into something ( Read more... )

Entirely wonderful. I love that we see just how much the Doctor cares for Evelyn and how much he misses her. It's interesting to listen to this when everyone is harshing on Rusty for having the Doctor say he misses Rose, because TtW proves to me just how much I long to hear him missing past Companions. It's clear that Mel has heard all about Evelyn and is tired of feeling that she can't possibly compare to the last one, but once they meet, they're friends. I LOVE that! I especially love the Rose=Evelyn angle, because the Doctor is the only being in the universe who could possibly make that connection.

SGS is really my favorite part, however. SGS doesn't use his Indoor Voice very often, but he breaks me when he does.

You can get a quick and dirty intro to her at wikipedia. Basically, she's a history professor in her mid-50's who meets the Doctor in a VERY contrived set-up. She talks the Doctor into taking her along because she wants to see historical events and he agrees because she makes the world's best chocolate cake. (This is apparently why Mel had to put him on a diet!) Because she's older than his usual Companion, she isn't particularly star-eyed and never idolized him. Unlike Tegan, however, I don't think she criticizes him or fights with him; she just doesn't take his crap.

Thicker than Water mentions some past conflict between the Doctor and Evelyn that I'm not familiar with. This lack of knowledge didn't affect my enjoyment at all, which is why I'm guessing that you probably would enjoy this play even without the back story.

Master is long and wordy, but Quite A Bit fabulous. I want Geoffrey Beevers back on the show, I don't care how.
