OOC: Your guide to Qui-Gon Jinn

So just who is Qui-Gon Jinn?

He's from this little series of films called Star Wars -- perhaps you've heard of them? Specifically, he's in Episode One The Phantom Menace. At the time of TPM, Qui-Gon is a Jedi Master who has one Obi-Wan Kenobi as an apprentice. He's the one who stumbles across this little kid named Anakin and rescues him from being a slave, taking him away from Tatooine to become a Jedi. He was even planning on taking Anakin on as his new apprentice in spite of the Jedi Council's disapproval, but got skewered and killed by a Sith named Darth Maul before he could. His last words to Obi-Wan were asking him to take on Anakin instead.

We don't see Qui-Gon again in the other two prequels but we do find out that the Jedi Master that taught Qui-Gon was Dooku (who in turn was taught by Yoda himself) and that Dooku has left the Jedi Order and eventually turned to the Dark Side and became a Sith Lord. We also learn that Qui-Gon managed to find a way to, basically, become a Force ghost and his spirit comes back and teaches Yoda and Obi-Wan this trick as well which is where the blue ghosties come from in the original trilogy.

Qui-Gon is considered a great negotiator and is known for being able to get results even in really difficult situations. He is very outspoken and a bit of a rebel in the Jedi Order, and these traits kept him from a seat on the Jedi Council that otherwise would have been his.

We learn more about Qui-Gon in some of the books that have come out (such as the young adult Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson) but I'm not going to go too much into that because I'm taking Qui-Gon from a time before all of that.

How is Fandom Qui-Gon different?

I'm slightly tweaking Qui-Gon's history to bring him to Fandom. In canon Dooku didn't leave the Jedi until after Qui-Gon's death -- that death being the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm moving Dooku's departure from the Jedi Order to when Qui-Gon was still his Padawan. He asked Qui-Gon to come with him, but after much soul searching Qui-Gon decided to stay. Master Yoda took him on as apprentice and sent him to Fandom to get him away from all the gossip and staring.

Personality and powers

Even as a Padawan, Qui-Gon is very sure of himself and his place in the universe and had a well developed sense of right and wrong. That his sense of right might be a little bit more flexible than a lot of Jedi is one of the things that made him such a good match for Dooku and will make him a bit of a maverick in the future.

He's got a bit of a mischievious streak and a dry sense of humour, is curious about other beings and people and loves learning about them. He's not above using his Jedi powers if he doesn't think it's explicitly wrong -- and will occasionally use such things as Force suggestions (the whole *handwave* "These are not the droids you're looking for" thing) to make his life easier.

Along with Force Suggestion, other Jedi powers Qui has include telekensis, enhanced speed, agility, the ability to sense other living beings and other force sensitives, limited telepathy, etc. etc.

What about those other Jedi here?

As for the other people from the Galaxy Far Far Away, Qui-Gon hasn't met any of them yet, although Anakin will of course recognise him. He will probably be able to sense that Ani, Luke and Jaina are Force sensitive (not that the Jedi robes and all in some of those cases wouldn't give it away) and will be delighted and fascinated to meet Jedi of the future. Whether he goes off on the whole "Chosen One" thing again with Anakin remains to be seen.
