Summary: Mary and John try to pick out Dean's first Halloween costume.

It’s four days until Halloween and the shop is bustling with excited children and equally excited parents, picking up and discarding costumes left and right as they strive to find the perfect one that will have all of Lawrence talking for the rest of the year. Candy and decorations litter the worn, faded tile, crunching and breaking under the dirty rubber wheels of shopping carts. Children scream in glee and parents laugh, and there is a general feeling of festivity in the air.

For Mary and John Winchester, it is no different. It is their son Dean’s first Halloween and they want it to be perfect. The gurgling ten month old could care less what costume he wears when they go visit Grandma and Grandpa Winchester, but the new parents are caught up in a whirlwind of exhilaration. Dean’s big green eyes are entranced by the sights and colors of the embellishments, the ghouls and ghosts lining the walls fascinating, not frightening. Meanwhile, Mary excavates the store for the perfect costume for her baby boy.

“What about this, my love,” she coos to Dean, holding up a soft striped zebra costume.

Beside her, John smirks. “We don’t want to scar him for life, Mary.”

She rolls her eyes in turn. “You’re no fun.”

“I’m loads of fun,” he grumbles, then pulls out the costume he’s been hiding behind his back. “I like this,” he says firmly, holding up a red and black Led Zeppelin onesie and a tiny pair of sunglasses. There is a giant grin on his face.

“Absolutely not,” she laughs in dismissal.

“What’s wrong with Zep?”

She laughs again, and baby Dean laughs with her, encouraged by his mother’s silky voice. “No. Just no.” She leans down and kisses Dean on the nose, whispering loudly “Daddy’s silly, isn’t he? Yes, he is.”

John snorts and shakes his head, and Mary only continues to smile. Her family is perfect, safe and healthy. This is the normality she always dreamed of - picking out pumpkins and decorating the windows with little tissue paper ghosts; no salting and burning corpses. She has a family, and they are happy.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spies a discarded costume nearly buried underneath a Bloody Mary outfit. She digs through the fabric and admires it as she pulls it out. “John,” she calls after her husband, who’s already wandered off in search of candy. He sticks his head back around the end of the aisle curiously. She holds up the outfit. “What about this one?”

John peers at it for a moment, then smiles warmly. “It’s perfect.”

Mary grins happily and turns to Dean for the final approval. He gurgles happily, his big green eyes sparkling with excitement, as his mouth tries to form a word it doesn’t yet know.

Puppy.

With the entire family’s approval, the Winchesters check out and head off to the pumpkin patch to buy Dean’s very first pumpkin.

This is how it should be, Mary thinks again as they exit the store, John’s arm around her waist and Dean smiling at her as his pudgy hands try to grab her golden curls. This is how it was always meant to be.
