embedded in my subconscious

Ok so, here I am, brainstorming for my final project for Creative Writing (and no, it's not a Heroes fanfic, lol), and we had to base it on a piece of artwork from the museum on campus, and I chose this black and white picture of a building in NYC taken from a cab window.  So here was my idea:

A guy is living in New York, as a salesman or something ( Read more... )

Oh, and something like that happened to a friend of mine in middle school. We had to write a mystery story (mine was about a pet shop, where the animals talked like in Homeward Bound, 'cause I was even nerdier/more loser-y back then if you can imagine). She wrote one that she got a really good grade on. But then when I read it, I reminded her it was almost the same thing as something we saw on Beyond Belief. XP

Haha, I know, if I didn't love Neil so much, I'd hate him for having all the good ideas! XD But he's the man, so I forgive him. :P

Argh. I know the feeling. Lots of people tell me: "that story you have for that character is exactly like this one thing!", when what really happened is I've gone and based my stuff off of the same folklore as used by something famous. :/
Not having read the book (gasp!) I can't really make an apt comparison. But it's very hard to be original these days. If you can make the story different enough, I say go ahead with it. It's a really awesome idea, and it's not like it's exactly the same, right?

I ended up turning the salesman (who I think I might make not-a-salesman) into the one who initiates the stealing-of-identity, and focusing on what's happening in his life before that happens that would drive him to do that. I think that makes it different enough. And also, it was really just a tiny little occurance in "American Gods" that didn't have much to do with the overall plot (it didn't happen to a main character), so I think I'm good.

Ugh, this is why I like fanfic so much, I don't have to worry about being completely new and creative...I'd rather just steal other people's ideas and characters. XD
