Hooray for you! Sometimes we all need a good kick in the pants! Enjoy the rest of your stay and keep in mind that you are talented they're just trying to bring out the best in you.
You should've said, "Actually, I heard that inspiration was dead. Didn't you read John Berger's latest book? Wow, once you get past 30, it must be really hard to keep up."
Or you could've said, "Actually, there's loads of untapped potential for irony in representational images. For instance, I could paint a portrait of you and title it This is Not the Ugliest, Stupidest Bitch on the Planet."
Or I suppose you could just continue to get along with people and learn some interesting shit. Good job, man!
other things you could have said:bubbalumpkisAugust 1 2005, 18:22:30 UTC
"So, is that why you're teaching then?"
"Perfect! You see, it's meant to be a commentary on the 'Interestingly uninformed insignificance of the modern art canon'. You guys are all pretty good at this!"
"What? We were supposed to be painting cannons?"
"I got your 'Art Canon' right here"

Have fun, and hang in there - you're great, they're just being pretentious. I remember critiques from high school where the policy seemed to be "if you can't say something mean, don't say anything at all"...
And does this better not mean you won't be back next Saturday in time for my Birthday Extravaganza!
god damn the art school. i hated having my shit critiqued. it's all just to make you a better artist. it all works out. you can always look at your own art in a different way. it sometimes helps to have it shoved down your throat. ;)
ohohoh and then there is always that person who the professor loves. oh i hated that.
i didn't realize only 20 people were accepted and there were 150 apps. that is soooo awesome jed.
long winded...blueborahAugust 2 2005, 23:55:14 UTC
ahhhh i see.
well, once upon a time i went to art school to be fashion designer. i didn't last very long, about 1 1/2 yrs. then i realized i didn't want to deal with all of those kinds of people forever or end up cutting patterns for the gap, you know? i wanted to do couture with alexander mcqueen or something. anyways, with all of that i took life drawing classes, basic drawing, design, textiles and lots of other stuff. i wouldn't call myself an artist, especially not compared to some of my peers at school. damn. some of those people were amazingly talented.
overall, art school is the best kind of school. there ain't nothin better than truckin your paints around to your next class.
oh and seriously, i just finished season 1 and it rocks. i need to call eric, so i can get season 2. eeek!

It was sooooo good wasn't it? Call Eric. It gets even better.
My mother was a designer for a bit. She even had a few large shows. Fashion has always interested me. I especially love couture (forgive my spelling) and the similarities between modern sculpture. I know I sound like an ass but here me out. Really dressing the body is the same as creating an assemblage or even a 2-d collage. Amazing. When do I get to see your work? Just because you are not working for the house of Gucci, it doesn't mean that you can't still design. I want to talk to you about this monumental body of work that I am going to embark on. Totally different than anything I have ever done. I won't discuss it here because I know these asses will judge me (you heard me pstain).
