So I've decided to start dabbling in photography again and bought myself a DSLR (Canon Rebel XTi ... though if I had to do it again, I think I'd get the Pentax K100D or K10D just for in-body stabilization). It's hella-fun, doesn't require me to spend tons of money and time developing and printing and in all just an enjoyable hobby ( Read more... )

Awesome, man. I'm looking into getting a Nikon D40 soon. The only thing is I've got to save up. You can't just buy a camera... you've got to invest in a good lens... and then you want a telephoto... and some filters... and shoeflash... and some high capacity memory cards... and so on. These things have a way of cascading, you know. :)

I personally wouldn't get the D40 due to lens issues (only supports AF-I and AF-S lenses if you want autofocus ... and no split-prism for manual focus but supposedly the LCD can tell you when a focus point looks good). As I mentioned - I heard very good things about Pentax's line.

And yeah, don't I know it. I've already spent more than I was expecting, and I still don't have a shoeflash :(

Really? The reviews of the D40 I've read have been overwhelmingly positive. Alot of them have been saying that Nikon has really worked on the guts of the camera rather than chasing megapixels.

But really, it doesn't have a critical focus in then viewfinder at all? Hrm. I don't like that.

Oh, no, the D40(x) is a fine camera. But it has some very real compromises to get to that price point (such as the aforementioned lens compatibility issue). And as for the split-prism - most DSLRs lack it these days. There are a few companies who make them for DSLRs but it'll cost you ~$100 more + installation fee :(
