Since it came out in the paper a few weeks ago, it is no secret that someone embezzled a bunch of money from St. Bernard's Parish. Even though that person has been charged and has long since been gone, they have tightened up on their money management. I am fine with that, it makes sense. They've been stung, and don't want it to happen again.
We count out the till after each rental at the lanes. In the past, one of us would count out the money and drop it and the register tape in the safe while the other worker would start the cleaning. Now, both workers need to count out the money on the bar in front of the camera, and there is a full sheet we need to fill out. Cash, coins, checks, starting money, bag number, etc., then we both need to sign it and put it in a plastic deposit bag. Then we need to label the bag with the totals and both sign the bag. Pretty standard.
No big deal right? WRONG!!! What took one person to do in five minutes now takes 2 people about 15-20 minutes. We only get paid up until a half hour after a party, and by the time we are done counting the money, there is only a few minutes left to do all the cleaning. Needless to say, we are there an extra 10-20 minutes past what we are getting paid for EVERY party, and when there is another party following the first one, we have no time to clean after counting because they are already there.
My boss was at the party tonight with my coworker and I. After the party left, we were counting out the money and I starting telling my boss how much this new process sucks for us stating the above reasons, and she said that that is just the way it has to be now. I was getting pretty riled up and was starting to raise my voice a bit at times, but was able to keep it professional for the most part. I told her that we have never had problems with the way we have been handling the money in the lanes, and that this personally feels like a slap in the face. We have been off by a lot only twice in the 7.25 years I have been working there, and those were attributed to new workers entering sales into the register incorrectly.
Now I understand that this accounting mismanagement has nothing to do with us personally, and that it is for the security and accountability of the money with the bookkeeper. It just sucks, and I voiced my opinion about it as both the assistant manager and as the worker who has been there the longest.
Once I got home, I contemplated calling my boss and apologizing for my attitude, (I am a very nice guy after all, I guess maybe too nice), but I just said "FUCK IT!", and am proud that I finally stood up and said something.
Was I wrong for my attitude? Any input?
