A thought occurred to me when reading about someone bitching about the nation becoming socialist

Were they actually using the term socialist correctly or were they simply using it as a synonym for "bad"?

Well, now that his discussion has continued while I wasn't looking, it has apparently become a synonym for bad.

So what do you think - pre-2010 health care, already very socialist, somewhat, vaguely, or not really socialist?

I'd say somewhat. You draw a good parallel toward the group buying in and pooling money and then taking out from that pool when you need it but that's only a minor part of socialism.

The only one I've figured out so far is that communism and socialism were so vilified in the last generation that it invokes the "Us vs Them" tribal instinct.
