For those who like to twitter

Jun 17, 2008 23:02

Not to be mean, but go back and look at your posts.  And just think that this is what you're posting for all your friends.

Actually, I'm being a little mean, but mostly not caring about tact.  It's for your own good though.

This was exactly my complaint about Twitter as well. Although I admit it has its uses, it can also be even more inane than regular blogging.

Fulkerguy... However I admit to becoming a rapid Twitter Shitter now a days.

This is why I quit Twitter last night.

I dunno, I generally only use it to talk about something cool/funny I am seeing or enjoying when I am out and can't get to a computer. But then, I think I haven't actually twittered in awhile. It's an occasional thing.

I agree that moment to moment update about the mundane thing someone is doing is pretty lame.

And that's exactly why your twitter logs, and most of the other folks on my f-list who export to LJ, don't really bug me. I've seen some pretty cool links or info bits through Twitter shipments that I would have otherwise missed.

But I do have one or two of the "Just got up. Having a cup of coffee. Whee comics. Gonna brush my hair. etc. etc." Twitterers whose posts I see and want to spoon my eyes out. But I'm noticing a high correlation between that kind of Twittering and the overall content of the same people's LJs...I just get more inanity now that they're on Twitter. Obviously time to do some f-list house keeping.

i should count myself blessed, then, since I don't have any of those innane Twits on my f-list :-)

Yeah there are a couple of people on my flist who just use twitter instead of the big boring post that they used to write. So I skip them regardless.

Don't understand why you think you're being mean. I find it no more inane then most peoples LJ posts. Then again if I really want to know what's going on in someones life. I talk to them.

Arcane concept I know.

It's also why you hardly see anything of importance on my LJ, if people really want to know whats going on in my life, they can ask me. If they don't want to read my inane bullshit, then they won't.

and a tacked on thought:

It's ridiculous to expect your friends to post what YOU want to see on their blogging tools. Not saying you were necessarily saying that, but I've had people complain to me before how their friends never write what they want to read. And all I could do was ask why they thought someones personal blogging tool was about them.

Yeah, I mean, if I had my choice what people were posting, it wouldn't be safe for work ;)

It can be misconstrued as mean, and I really don't feel like invoking the LJ drama gods.

Unfortunately folks tend to be extra inane with their twitters because it's so easy to micropost. I don't think people are even looking at what they're firing off into the ether, hence my suggestion that they go back and look at their own posts.

They may not even realize that they're announcing to the world "I did xyz mundane task and it was slightly out of the ordinary", and other posts that you wouldn't even find fit to bring up in a face to face conversation because of the irrelevance.

I use LJ as a tool, both to keep up on other people, and to keep others up on my own life, but it is definitely not the only tool I have. However, it reduces the value of the tool when the signal to noise ratio is threatened.

I just started Twittering, for the sole purpose of promoting my new comic. It's a little odd to get used to, and I don't want to set up a bad "signal to noise ratio" as Jeebachu so eloquently put it, but I do want to put out enough that the followers don't feel they're being neglected.

For me, right now, it's a matter of balance. Just like any online community these days, they give a voice to those who can feel voiceless, or who are trying to find a voice.
