i have a dell 20" widescreen that does 1680x1050 and includes a USB hub, DVI/Svideo/Composite/VGA in with the ability to picture in picture or side by side 2 of the video ins. i paid about 460 for it and i've never been happier with a monitor purchase. the VGA in is unacceptable for 1680x1050, as the signal just doesn't provide a nice picture. DVI works great, though, and the other video inputs used to turn the monitor into a tv for me.
with LCD monitors, you deffinately get what you pay for. i'm pretty sure the price on the dells has come down, as i've had my monitor for about a year and a half now. my dad was able to pick up a 20" widescreen (panisonic, i think) for $200. it doesn't include the multiple inputs or the usb hub and i notice an odd scan quality to it, but it's a relatively good value for the price.
mostly, i'd say to invest in something good if you want something good.
I think the Dell 20" you're referring to is down to $360 now. I may just go ahead and get one of those. Don't know what I'll use the gift card for though...
