I loved your closing sentence. "[T]rudging, blind of all hindsight, into the future" does seem to be the trait of humanity, at least when taken as a whole. As much as Suzuki focused on Auschwitz in this essay, I believe he would agree with you. I don't think it is just our shameful past we disregard either; we ignore the shameful present as well. It is as if we think it will go away if don't think about it, like a child hiding under the covers.

Even though I count myself among the idealists of the world, and to many degrees a humanist, I know we will relive the horrors of the Holocaust in some form over again. The human mind is to creative and ingenious and to ignorant and blind for us not to.
