This episode was a little... strange.
Ben Edlunds' omnipresence in it really should have clued me in on that, LOL.
Thoughts...
Over 24 hours later and i'm still miffed that Dean told Castiel he is "like a brother". And no, I really don't think I'll get over it anytime soon.
BFF, guardian angel, savior, whatever. But brother, with all the connotation that has for Dean? Nuh uh.
The idea that in Hell "The Blue Danube" plays on the background on repeat had me LMAO. I love that waltz and I did use to play it on repeat when I was a kid and yep, after 5 times it gets annoying.
I feel like plot wise we got some clarification but... it would have more impact if we knew all this along the season. It would have me much more interested in what was going on instead of not really caring much and to have it all in one episode now is good but feels too late for me to really bother about an angel that wasn't there most of the time. Maybe that's just me.
Dean needs to do a "How to communicate with others" workshop. I've no doubt he is right but the whole "Shut up, I'm right 'cause I'm right" is really stupid.
I'm actually more interested in why is the aloof Crowley so incredibly stressed out then Castiel's issues.
Mostly because his problem is the same problem that Sam had in season 4 and Dean's reaction is the same and basically I'm all "been there, done that" about it. Also, I really didn't like season 4 :p
And where is Sam in all this? I mean Dean feels betrayed and hurt but Sam was the one who was brought back with no soul and almost destroyed his brother because of this... shouldn't he be even more hurt by Castiel's actions? When do we get to see his take on what happened?
I know everyone loves a good Dean/Castiel star-crossed scene but this is really a 3 people (okay, 2 people and 1 angel) problem.
Crazy theories...
Now for how I'd like the season to end (which will not happen at all, REALLY):
Mark Sheppard teased us at JIB2 and also in a recent interview about the fact that we never saw Crowley's eyes go black. Or red or yellow or any other color that indicates "demon inside". So far the only clue we have that he is a demon is that he makes deals and kisses men and really, he could have all sorts of other reasons to do that.
Obviously, Mark could just be being a misleading little bastard (really, he really, really could!) but here is my alternative version of what is happening:
Crowley is not actually a demon. He is some sort of special envoy from God trying to help in finding the best leader for Heaven.
He is not bothering with Raphael since Raphael wants to destroy mankind and God loves His creation so does not find Raphael suitable. One possible choice is Castiel. He's not perfect but he does try and has learned about compassion and choice, 2 things very important for this job. However he also needs to deal with temptation (I know Dean is a pretty good test here but that is not the kind of temptation I mean) and pride and this is where Crowley and his proposition come in.
In my ideal end that I just made up and is nowhere near the real one, Sam figures this out (because Dean refuses to accept explanations and because Sam is smart, yo), possibly with Balthazar letting something slip about Crowley that has him wondering and helps his brother see how they need to stir Castiel in the right direction.
In the end some beam of light takes Castiel and we spend all Summer wondering whether he a) got the job or b) got smitten.
Aren't y'all glad that I'm not in the SPN writing team? :D
