Motorola Droid: Day 1

I finally got a smart phone! This was a pretty big jump for me - I've been out of contract with ATT since 2006 and buying replacement phones on eBay. I jumped in and got the new Motorola Droid, $120 on sale through Overstock, with 2 year contract at Verizon. $70/month ($40 voice plan, $30 data). That's not a bad price. I pay about $60 for my plan ($40 voice, $5 text plan, $15 data) on my non-smartphone Dare. I could probably handle an extra $10 the next time around...

I find it a little irritating that the "data plan" is a different price depending on the device. I guess it makes sense to give people just doing email and web a deal since they aren't really using $30 worth.

I'm kind of excited about the free texting. The Google Voice app does SMS over data instead of $0.20/msg. Receiving, too. It might eat batteries a little faster, but it's a cool idea.

Yeah, my phone is not advanced enough to really charge as much as a real smartphone. The Internet is as irritating as it useful.

Aside from the usual apps a smart phone (especially one with a touch screen) needs some cleaning and screen protection accessories too; I've got a bunch of motorola droid screen protector sheets to keep the scratches away from my droid.
