No doubt one happened at VT is a trajedy, just as what is happening in Iraq continues to be, but this quote makes an assumption that I don't think is the case.
Our greif for the victims and their family and friends isn't really for them. The truth is our greif is for ourselves. We all know people who attend colleges and in the wake of this trajedy could easisly see that happening at any one of the universities that we either attend or know someone who attends or attended. We see it happening to us and so our greif is a greif of fear.
Iraq on the other hand is separated from us. The media casual mentions the casualties and fails to show the sadness of victims and their families. We don't see us going to war personally any time soon so we personally don't cry out in protest or in greif.
