Fisher Elementary, which is located in Frisco, TX has suspended an art teacher, for taking her fifth grade students to the Dallas Museum of Art. I was reading CULTURE CODE by Clotaire Rapaille and he stated that America was an adolescent culture. Not old-school like Japan or France or Greece or some place. If the history of nations were compared to the lifespan of a person, we of the USA, we are in our teenage years. And things that are adolescent: focus on the "now", dramatic mood swings, constant need for exploration, challenge to authority (for the sake of it), celebration of extremes, eccentircs and novelty, openness to reinvention and a strong belief that mistakes warrant second chances- these things are distinctly American. The second chances thing struck me as a stupid idea. Like a teenager who wrecks the car and knows daddy'll pay toget it fixed and hand over the key again, the education system seems to bolster the idea of unlimited screw-ups. Mess up enough and... well, we'll let you mess up some more, sonny. You never have to get anything right. The safety net is always there, and guess what, you won't even have to climb up to high to have access to it ( ... )
