Yes, I know the term for the civilised world is "football", but football is easy to confuse with that other sport... the one with the overpayed, corrupt, drama queens where all the players care about is their endorsement deals.
Henceforth, I will refer to "soccer".
So anyway, I went downtown today to watch the football match. My friend Tony is from an Italian family, and Commerical Drive is No-Fun-Couver's "Little Italy". We don't have a "Little France".
Anyway, the street was packed. We arrived an hour before the match started, and most cafes were spilling out into the street still. A hair salon had set up a TV in their waiting room and didn't seem to mind us staning in the doorway, so it looked like that was going to be our spot. Then our friend Ray went to the convenience store, and saw that the owner was taking a TV fresh out of the box and setting it up. He checked if we could watch, and so we scored great seats with a bunch of snacks at arm's reach, hehe. By the time the game was over, there were about 30 people stuffed into the little store. Fire regulations be damned!
I don't follow soccer much and don't know a lot aside from the basic rules... but even if you've never watched a FIFA match at all, you can't help but get sucked into the the energy. Everyone held their breath for the great saves and missed goals. Everyone even applauded Zidane for staying on the field when he was hurt. Of course, we went ballistic when he got red-carded.
Then we walked up and down the street amongst the sea of Italian flags, body paint, mockup World Cups being carried around, and crazy guys climbing street lights. It was hot and loud, but lots of fun.
Then we hung out at Spiro and Pam's, which was fun but not as exciting to read about.
I hope everyone else got a chance to enjoy the match. Soccer is certainly different from North American sports, so give it a chance even if regular sports aren't your thing.
Oh, one more thing...
BOOM Headshot!!!
