Post: When Fandom Worlds Collide

Mar 01, 2011 23:36

In the words of Neil Young, off "Fork in the Road", "Truth is fiction, truth is lies, strange things happen when worlds collide..."Weird things happen when you're cycling through fandoms at hyperspeed so you can get back to actual work! You know how fandom seems multitudinous and labyrinthian at first blush? Then you run across familiar people ( Read more... )

OHHHH TSN. It's like ... lapped the FPS/RPS divide or something. Here's the thing for me. The movie is based on a book that was inspired by real events, but by no means intended to be a totally reliable accounting of the facts. I liked the movie as a story, and I enjoyed the characters played by Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg ( ... )

It was hard to take the high road! But IAAL before I am a fanfic writer, and a human being above all; also RPF raises enough questions about the ownership of a person's public image, and the right to freedom from prurient speculation and stanning. IMO, a person who didn't ask to be a public figure, a person who specifically values his privacy, has more basis to complain about being stanned and having fic written with his name attached to it ( ... )

Crossovers! I have had ~ideas, but I'm always afraid to do them because I fear where Doctor Who crosses Cookleta is possibly a thin sliver of audience. Haha. For example.

THE BOSS. Oh man. ♥_♥ is all. (Hmm, Born in the USA!Cookleta. Where Cook meets that album cover. Oh yes. [And Archie... um, "admires" said art work. WHAT? Who said that??])

Well, you know I'd totally read your Dr Who/Cookleta crossover :)

I LOVE BRUCE, what can I say :)

Oh my gosh, I want that Inception crossover, it sounds like a fantastic idea! Also, I'm currently reading The Mortal Instruments trilogy right now, but after that, I have Hunger Games waiting for me.

As for the duets, I actually watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anniversary concert on... HBO, or something like that, and I loved it. It was amazing and it made me want to watch it all over again.

Also, I thought Savarin lived in Singapore and had been? You have a point about them not signing up for all this, and I notice a lot of people disclaiming that their work is based on the fictional TSN versions of Mark and Eduardo, rather than the actual people. The movie does make people wonder, however, about several things. It would be nice to hear the story in his own words, but he's probably getting tired of it by now.

I'll hazard a positive opinion to say, you will love the Hunger Games! Every single person I know who's read it has enjoyed, and that ranges from Daughter and her friends to highfalutin' English Literature PhDs. It's really clever, and a terrific, accessible read.

That U2/Bruce duet is my new favorite thing. TT__TT forever :)

I am told that Savarin relocated out here to lie low once he was told about the movie, but that may or may not be accurate? He's pretty low key, but he seems to have developed a rep for partying, IDEK.

Wow, that sounds impressive. I actually had my Mom pick it up for me because another friend of mine recommended it, saying that she kept having friends borrow it and love it.

I haven't really researched into him, so I can't really say either way. I will admit you've made me very curious, however.

I hope you're enjoying the Hunger Games! And, omg, it took a lot of willpower to not demand huge details about Savarin! But I decided to take the high road :)

Hey hey :) So many crossover ideas, so little time <3 And, The Social Network! I wanna love, and yet how weird is it that the guy lives here, c'mon. NOBODY lives here!

Also: I suspect when RL and fandom intersect, fanfic will always give the more satisfying answer :)

I'm pretty sure this is the case. ;)

Also, I love when you run into familiar "faces" in other fandoms. It makes me gleeful. :)

Ah, fantasy usually >>> reality :)

And what other fandoms are you into now? I remember you liked LoTR :)

Oh, definitely.

I'm also really into the BBC show Merlin's fandom and kind of into the ABC show Castle's fandom (though that one is tiiiiny and not terribly active if you don't ship het). :)

Ah, I'm somewhat of an Arthurian snob, and the Merlin-lite-reboot doesn't really work for me - though Anthony Steward Head is kind of magnificent in it :) The fic seems pretty awesome, though!

We don't get Castle over here, so I'm not familiar with it, though I know frackin_sweet watches, like you :)
