So, as it turns out, I was the lone costumer at the Sunday performance. Circumstances kept potential fellow time-travellers isabelladangelo  and debbiedoodle busy with their 21st century lives.

But, having enjoyed myself last year, read comments of envy in padawansguide  and bauhausfrau 's journals, and already bought the tickets, I persevered, and drove to Baltimore all by myself. Because it was ( Read more... )

You were missed on Saturday (we toasted you at the tea)! The gown looks great, though! I have seen it on you, but it seems to look better with ambiance! BTW--you are lucky in one respect--because of the ice, the grave site was closed to the public the night before.

They still had the churchyard roped off on Sunday, but I hung out on the sidewalk just outside for this pic, and leaned off the porch landing for some others--to avoid catching too much yellow CAUTION" tape and spoiling the ambiance!

Fabulous! That's all I can say. I've looked through the other events on your flickr page and that's all I can come up with.

This has nothing to do with anything, but the ladies in your area dress quite well. When I was in VA for the Battle of the Hook in October, I saw some of the best, beautiful and accurate kits ever. What I see in the greater Philadelphia area doesn't even compare to what you ladies do.

I think it helps to have a community that encourages, goads, and enables one another. I used to be more self-conscious about being the "only one" in costume at an event. My personal feeling, freely interpreted from "Alice's Restaurant" (if you've not heard the long, story-version of the song, find it--it's hysterical!)

If there's only one of you, they'll think you're a little loony.

If there are two of you, they'll think you're gay and crazy.

But if there are three of you--can you imagine, three costumers in full period dress?--why, then, they'll think it's a movement!

I don't really have a problem with being thought of as weird, and though I'm not gay, I don't take being mistaken for one as an insult. And if it's a movement, well, I'm happy to share my enthusiasm!

Well, you know, I still get self-conscious, but it's definitely easier with a group -- and folk like this Poe society who encourage! We should go to a Gadsby's ball together (a very costume friendly group). I saw Gretchen, the site director last night and she's going to send me the dates shortly.
