Grave of the Fireflies is reality. It is what America really did to Japan during World War 2. It's not a fairytale that gets a happy ending, because in real life it doesn't have one. I think that people need to see it because they think America did nothing wrong. WE DID. And people need to know about it.
America is well aware of how horrible we are. See I knew that response was coming, 'it's reality'... The point of movies was not to show reality because we live reality every day. And even with that defense, good cinema isn't showing war and saying "Here's life, it sucks" Shinler's list isn't worth watching either. That's what documentaries are for. Movies are a break FROM reality. It's why in movies like Titanic they didn't focus on the tragic event that was about to happen, it was barely part of the movie, they knew it was a horrifying thing to see so they made a love story instead and added the Titanic as part of it so they could give people an idea of what it must've been like without making it the whole focus of the movie
( ... )
The way war works is, once one side takes a hit, they're officially defeated. Had we NOT bombed Japan what would've happened?
America is too soft, the past is past, it happened it happened, why do we have to feel bad for what we did to Japan, but they don't have to so much as consider an apology for the families who lost their loves?
That's the kind of anger those movies bring, that's why I didn't watch pearl hardor and never will, and it's why i'll never watch grave of the fire flies, because Japan and America are both big babies who should've left well enough alone, No one is more guilty than the others.
Those soldiers lives were EVERY BIT as valuable as those civilians.
Some movies like Grave of the Fireflies EDUCATE people so we don't have to make the same mistakes again, even though America continues to do so. Something doesn't have to be a documentary to be educational. Things happen and more people are inclined to watch a cinematic movie than a historical documentary. It gets your point across to more people.
There have been movies made from all points of view of every war. Fine don't watch those movies but they are AMAZING movies. If you want to remain ignorant fine. But that doesn't mean these movies aren't good movies, they are.
"They did it first" is NOT an ok excuse for what did. That would be like Joshua flicking you in the arm and then you coming back and beating the crap out of Nicholas. That is the equivalent to our retaliation for what they did.

No more, no less, neither side was innocent.
