I was in a karaoke competition last year, and had the same sort of thing happen to me. They are, in fact, looking for a certain kind of stage presence that appeals to DRUNK PEOPLE. Keep that in mind, and just tell yourself that your stage presence is better suited elsewhere (concert hall? coffee house?).
