Spring cleaning Part I/ Design flaw

Apr 18, 2010 18:12

It is not really spring cleaning as such but part one of my "thoroughly clean every room at least once a year"-ritual. The kind, where "thoroughly" means emptying every cupboard, shelf, drawer and box, sort the contents, clean the container, all that stuff ( Read more... )

I've started spring cleaning today, too. My biggest achievement there was defrosting the fridge. It must have been at least 10 litres of frozen water in there...

But does it not feel totally good to have done it? *g*

Oh yes, totally. Only, this was just the tip of the iceberg ;)

Which is why my spring cleaning is usually spread out over the whole year...

Wow, I'm impressed!!
I don't think I could cope with doing a whole kitchen in one go, never mind also doing the bathroom. I'm doing something very similar here as part of unpacking/moving in, and usually want to stop scrubbing badly enough to do so after only two cupboards. Maybe it's different when it's only your own dirt from only a year. Somehow I have a suspicion that one relatively cleanly occupant creates less of that than a whole family with at at least two, at lleast one of which quite small (there are definite signs of stairgates and such having been in place...), but still. Special item of cleaning-displeasure? Corner cupboards, especially badly designed ones. I'm not sure I'll be able to fit enough of me into the bottom one to get to the back of it... Needless to say, I opted for a nice afternoon out with a walk round a lake and some minigolf for the whole family today instead of tackling that one... ;)

The first time I did a thorough cleaning was after a few years of not cleaning too much. Cleaning the tops of the cupboards in the citchen was - appaling. That day I decided to do that "every room every year"-thing. It is manageable and has the added bonus that I do know where everything is and what treasures are hidden in the boxes...

Yes, that makes sense. I've been taking a single-edge razor blade to the tops of the cupboards, as scrubbing with a sponge was not doing much to the ickiest. (Previous house, I didn't use or clean the tops of cupboards, 'cause they had an edge around them and after the first look, quite frankly, I just balked at that idea totally.) Good to know that it won't be as bad in subsequent years, thanks! *hugs*

My mom always affixes a sheet of newspaper to the top of the cupboards and just changes the paper every cleaning. If you cannot see the tops, you cannot see the paper either. I still do that cleaning thing as it is strangly satisfying.
