I don't often do these but this was fun! Thanks to twilightspeaks
"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.(+$ means its on the shelf waiting)
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Strike out the books you have ( Read more... )

I always dislike these lists, even if I occasionally feel compelled to do them. As someone else said in response to this same meme, "I read a lot, just not the things on this list." And what a particularly silly list it is. I'm supposed to care that I've only read X number of books off of some publishing consortium's most printed list? (Especially when a number of those entries are series - this "top 100" includes at least 110 books, depending on whether some of the entries mean the series or just one book in it.)

Maybe they figure the average adult has only read six out of these hundred because they're printing way too many copies and getting tens of thousands of books remaindered? Either way, Angry Big Damn Otter disapproves of this meme.

Geez you are so bitter. I think you don't like this list trying to make you feel inferior.

I mostly don't like this list, because as I said, I don't think allot of these books need to be read. The big read is a government sponsored program. The goal is to get whole cities to read the same book and like talk about it or something, but I don't agree with the books they have chosen personally.

Well, I do read mostly science fiction and fantasy books, so it's possible that after years of having my reading choices questioned I'm tired of these lists that basically say "Only the most boring and/or over-hyped books in your chosen genre are worth reading." (Not that I'm saying books like Brave New World and Hitchhiker's Guide don't deserve their fame, just that they wouldn't be on this list if they weren't already famous. On the other hand, I'd never even heard of, say, Captain Corelli's Mandolin until after it had been made into a movie - how'd that one make it on the list?)

I'm also amused that this seems to be a government sponsored, less effective version of Oprah's book club.

Also, I could loan you a copy of Dracula at some point. You want to read it in English or Spanish?

Well reading it in Spanish would be good practice, I don't think I would grasp most of it.
