CHAPTER 1

Seoul is a busy city.

It really never is a foreign friendly town.

I hate the fact that though I look one of them, I could never speak like them.

Unable to communicate very well, I huffed in annoyance.

Sitting in a corner while looking through their faces,

I’ve realized they looked so blank, so cold and unfriendly.

It was very far from where I came from.

And deep inside me, a little voice kept on nagging me to come back home and ask for my eomma’s forgiveness.

But at the same time, a part of me says to stay and do what I must do.

That I should not let my sacrifice be wasted…

Taking hold of the tiny paper inside my pocket, I stared hard at the address written on it.

‘A long way to go’, I whispered to myself.

I was about to get up when a man came onto my view and bumped me really hard,

I cursed loudly as I fell on the floor.

I thought I heard my bones cracked from the impact.

Not really aware of what’s happening, another man came running.

He was in a police’s uniform and I think he’s after to the one that bumped me.

He also looks a bit young, maybe around my age.

I wondered why he stopped in front of me, so even if I felt a hell lot of a pain down on my ass, I stood up and faced him.

I watched as he angrily shouted at me for some unknown reasons.

I felt mad towards him, but I reasoned to myself that a man in the uniform is the last thing I wanted to deal with.

So after the policeman stopped blabbering, I sighed and said

“A-ahm sho-ri! Ay downt unjersh-tand yu.” (I’m sorry! I don’t understand you.)

With little English that I know, I felt really stupid and embarrassed as I heard the police laugh after what I said.

“Really? Where are you from?” the police asked in perfect English.

Thankful that the other understood what I just said, I politely replied,

“Chaynis! A-hm prom Chaynah!” (Chinese! I’m from China!)

I saw him widened his eyes and smile at me.

“Ni hao! I am Lee Hyukjae at your service!” the police muttered.

I gasped as I heard him talk mandarin to me.

“N-ni hao! I’m Kim Junsu. Nice to meet you.”

We shared a firm handshake afterwards.

And then I just thought to myself, ‘Who said that Seoul is not friendly?’
