14. Jun: Chances

Jun didn't know why he felt so nervous.

He was standing outside Aiba's home, Aiba's homework weighing a ton in his bag. Nino had pushed him the duty of bringing Aiba his missed assignments. He had of course protested, but Nino had only said something about having other, more important things to do.

"Besides," Nino had added, while grinning widely. "I don't want to get sick too."

It wasn't like he minded bringing Aiba his homework, even if they lived furthest from each other and it would now take an hour for Jun to get home. Actually, when Sho had offered to go visit Aiba instead, Jun had declined the offer. A little too eagerly, maybe, since Sho had given him a strange look.

Well, here he was. He would have to push the doorbell sooner or later. Enough of this pathetic hovering.

Jun found Aiba bunched up in a nest of blankets in the living room, watching TV. Used tissue papers and half-finished cups of tea littered the floor around him, creating a minefield for Jun to navigate.

"Hi," Aiba croaked. His voice was thick and he sounded like a duck. Still, when he saw Jun he visibly perked up, obviously glad to have some company.

"I brought you your homework," Jun said, dropping his heavy bag on the floor with a dull thud. "How are you doing?"

"Sick," Aiba sneezed. "And bored. How was school?"
"Boring. Really boring. Even Nino was pretty quiet all day. I guess it's just not the same without you around."

Aiba laughed, but he was interrupted by a violent coughing fit. "I'm glad you guys haven't forgotten about me yet," he said after he was able to speak.

Jun shook his head. Then he paused, in thought. He had been wondering about something for a while now, but he hadn't known who to ask about it. Maybe he could talk to Aiba.

Jun had realized that they usually never had any time alone together, so this could be his only chance to bring this up. And who else could he talk to? Not to Nino, since it directly involved him, or Ohno. And Sho... Jun had the feeling that Sho wouldn't want to talk about it either. But Aiba... It had always seemed to Jun that out of them all, Nino considered Aiba to be his best friend. Maybe Aiba knew something. Or at least there was a possibility that the older boy had noticed something.

"What is it?" Aiba asked, peering at Jun curiously. "Do you have something on your mind?"

"Um," Jun began. It felt slightly ridiculous to even consider talking about this. But he had to. It was just way too weird. "Have you... noticed something about Nino? Something odd? In the way he acts?"

"I don't know, what do you mean?" Aiba asked, leaning closer to Jun. "Nino is generally odd, but other than that..."

"About the way he acts around Ohno," Jun added quickly, blushing slightly.

"Oh. That." Aiba said, his eyes brightening. "Definitely odd."

Jun could feel his face growing hotter. He didn't know how Aiba would react. Would he laugh at his theory? It was pretty ridiculous, but something made him wonder. "Do you think... that Nino could maybe possibly... like Ohno? I mean, really like him?"

Aiba blinked. And then he sneezed.

When he had wiped his nose, he turned back to Jun. "Do you mean... like a crush?"

Jun nodded, feeling silly. Maybe he was just reading too much into it. But Nino didn't crowd anyone like Ohno, he didn't pay that much attention to anyone else. Ever.

"You know, you might be right," Aiba said, surprising Jun. "How interesting."

"Huh? You agree?"

"Well, it makes sense. Nino doesn't stop watching Ohno. I've been doing research. Last Monday, for example: lunch. We ate outside. Nino sat next to Ohno, watching him for a full ten minutes, not noticing that I stole one of his onigiris and that Ohno ate half of his croquette. He also sat the whole break so that his knee was touching Ohno's knee. I have notes if you want to look."

Jun stared at Aiba. "Notes?"

"Well, it was a pretty boring class after lunch," Aiba said, looking sheepish. Then he grinned. "...I think it's kind of cute."

Jun stared at Aiba even more. "Cute?" he sputtered. "What, you don't think it's twisted or disgusting?"

"Don't be stupid," Aiba shrugged. "Like being gay is anything new. Besides, it's not really my business." Then he glanced at Jun, frowning. "Do you think it's disgusting?"

Jun shrugged. "No. It's pretty funny, though. I wouldn't have thought that Ohno was really Nino's type."

Aiba let out a croaky laugh. "What did you think Nino's type was?"

"I don't know... Well, Sho." Jun grinned. "With the way they are fighting. Or were fighting. And Nino enjoyed it; it was pretty easy to see."

Aiba laughed again. "Nino enjoys fighting. I think that the person he's fighting with doesn't really matter to him. Besides, crushing on Sho would be a lost cause, right?"

Jun frowned. "What? Do you think Nino has a chance with Ohno, then?"

Aiba's eyes widened with a sudden realization and obvious glee. "You know what? I think he does."
