chapter 14 chapter 15 16. Aiba: But what about Aiba?
Aiba was feeling increasingly more miserable by every passing second, minute and hour. He hated being sick beyond anything. He would have gladly been babysitting lions instead of having to deal with cold medicine and tissues and a runny nose and stuffy head and inability to stand up without feeling very, very dizzy.
"I am sick," he told his mother who passed him on her way to the kitchen that morning.
"Yes, dear," she said and was gone.
"I am siiiick," he said to his father when he came to check up on him.
"Quit whining," his father said, smiled and patted him on the head before returning to their restaurant downstairs.
"I am sick," he told his brother when he came home.
"And I am sick of you," was the reply.
He would have told all of their three dogs too if he had thought it would have made any difference.
Aiba tried sneezing and coughing and moaning, but no one was paying any attention to him anymore. "I am bored," he sighed to himself. His voice sounded low and stuffy in his ears. "I'll drown in my own snot and no one will notice," he added.
It wasn't that he wasn't really sick. He was. His head was swimming and his forehead felt hot even to his own touch. His throat was so sore that even swallowing hurt and his nose was so runny that it was hard to breathe properly. It was just that the boredom was making things even worse.
Watching TV was useless, he was getting sick of children's programs and stupid daytime TV. It was making his head hurt anyway. Pretty much anything involving thinking was out too. His head felt heavy and useless. He wished he could just unscrew it and change it for a better one.
Therefore, when Jun suddenly appeared with his homework, he felt unbelievably happy. He would have hugged Jun if he hadn't been so sick that jumping up would have probably killed him.
"I'm sick," he told Jun and was incredibly, ecstatically happy that Jun showed the proper amount of concern. He even handed him tissues when he sneezed. Jun was great. Jun bringing him his homework was the most wonderful thing in the whole world.
Aiba thought his fever had gone up again.
Nevertheless, Jun showing up gave him something else to concentrate on than his sore throat. Even in his muddled state he could understand that the fact that it was Jun who had come was significant. Nino or Sho would have been the most logical choice since they lived the closest to him. Jun lived in a completely opposite direction.
But he was glad it was Jun. Because Jun was saying something very interesting.
Aiba liked interesting stuff.
He had told himself that the whole Nino and Ohno situation had been only in his imagination, but if Jun had noticed it too, there had to be something going on. He was a little bit relieved. Being able to concentrate on something that didn't directly involve him was a nice change. Aiba didn't like obsessing over his own, stupid life. Also, having someone to share his thoughts on this matter was great.
...At least it made him feel a little less like he was slowly going crazy.
He hadn't really thought about it before, but there was obviously a reason why Nino had befriended Jun. Jun was awkward and sometimes too serious, but he was also smart and actually cared about things. Jun was also quite funny and sweet, even if he tried very hard to hide it. He was shocked to realize that he had never really paid attention to Jun before. It made him feel guilty because he found that he really liked this guy.
Though, admitting that he was a little bit obsessed - with notes and everything - probably hadn't been the best idea. Still, Jun seemed to get over it pretty quickly.
Aiba smiled. The more he thought about it, the more certain he was that Nino liked Ohno. "...I think it's kind of cute," he said, at the same time realizing that he really thought that it was very cute. Well, it was better than that other alternative, but he didn't want to think about that.
Jun's reaction to his words was slightly different from what he had been expecting. He didn't appear to really mind that much that Nino seemed to prefer guys. It was good too, since Aiba really didn't want to lose friends over something stupid like that.
"Should we... um, help?" he finally asked Jun. If he hadn't been so sick, he would have jumped up and down from excitement. "Nino likes Ohno and I think Ohno's not completely oblivious to it. I don't really know why, but I think if Ohno would just realize Nino's feelings, he would-"
Jun frowned. "Didn't you just say that it isn't any of our business?" he interrupted, narrowing his eyes. "I think you should leave them alone. Besides, you sound like a sappy romance novel."
Aiba sighed. Of course Jun was right. He should leave them alone. They could figure it out by themselves. But it was so hard! This had the potential to get very interesting. "Okay," he finally nodded. "I'll leave them alone. But I'll still monitor the situation. You can't stop me from taking notes."
"You are one incredibly creepy guy," Jun said, shaking his head. "But since a big part of our wellbeing hangs on how happy Nino is, I'll help you with those notes."
Aiba grinned. "Thanks. Now, we need a team name. And a secret handshake! I've always wanted a secret handshake. Even if it's only so we can confuse Sho with it. Do you think we should use some code in our notes, so that if they fall into the wrong hands they are unable to know who or what we are talking about?"
Jun stared. "I really hope that you are joking."
Aiba smiled and crawled closer to Jun, grabbing his right hand tightly between his palms. Jun twitched but didn't try to pull his hand away. "Now," Aiba said. "About that secret handshake."
