Notes: This used to be my favourite chapter! (cough... now it might be #22...) Believe it or not, most of this chapter was written over a year ago. o_o Don't worry, I rewrote most of it before posting! (I wonder if it made any difference, though...)
Also, this is the fluffiest fluffy thing ever. Remember to brush your teeth afterwards. Otherwise they might rot.

19 20. Nino: Some serious self-control problems (for all the parties involved).
When Ohno left the room to check on his clothes (and to run away), Nino let out a long sigh. Even though the tension that had been growing in him for the whole day still hadn't vanished, he was feeling a lot better. Why wouldn't he? He had been allowed to kiss Ohno. That small kiss had been worth a lot more than one miserable afternoon. It didn't matter that he had gotten soaked and beaten up or that his left wrist still hurt from when the guy had twisted it behind his back. Ohno's lips had been so soft. Nino closed his eyes and leaned back.
It didn't matter that Ohno had probably said yes only because he was too kind to say no and because he thought Nino had gone through enough unpleasant things for one day. And it didn't matter that the sketch lying on the couch next to him bore a clear resemblance to certain guy, even though Ohno had claimed it to be only anatomy practice. He, Ninomiya Kazunari, had been the one who had kissed Ohno, he and not Sakurai Sho. So there.
Still... It had probably been a Very Bad Idea to kiss Ohno. Because...
"I put your clothes in the dryer. They'll be dry soon."
Nino opened his eyes and saw Ohno standing in front of him, looking a bit uncomfortable. Nino wondered if he was being kicked out.
...Well, the kiss had been a bad idea because now he could only think about doing it again.
"Thanks," Nino said and gave Ohno a small smile. He felt almost giddy when he looked at Ohno, standing there and looking adorable and confused. He wondered if he could get away with grabbing Ohno and kissing him again or if he would only succeed in scaring him away. He regarded the boy standing in front of him and thought, pleased, that he didn't look scared. He tried to push away his own nervous feelings, pretending that his heart wasn't racing or that he didn't have to really concentrate on not giggling like a little girl. Nino didn't blush easily but now, while Ohno continued to look at him like that, with that weird, solemn look in his eyes, it was really, really close.
It was only lucky that Ohno didn't seem to notice any of this. Nino stood up, trying to stuff his hand into his pockets but only finding out that the sweatpants he was wearing didn't have any pockets. So he crossed his arms across his chest instead. "I can leave as soon as my clothes are dry. I don't want to bother you," he said. Acting like a love struck fool wouldn't be very appropriate anyway, not when he was probably being kicked out.
To tell the truth, Nino didn't really want to leave yet. He wanted to stay and see that Ohno was okay and - he wasn't going to deny it - if he would be able to get at least one more kiss from him.
"You don't have to leave..." Ohno muttered, looking down and Nino's heart skipped a beat. "My parents aren't going to be home until later and you're not bothering me... Um... We could eat something and, do our homework together and... um..."
Nino blushed fiercely and very suddenly. He was surprised by his reaction to Ohno's very ordinary words. Doing homework together was completely normal; any two friends could do that. But Ohno wanted him to stay, even after he had kissed him. Nino ducked his own head down too, staring at Ohno's feet instead of his face, wishing his hair would hide his blush. It was a good thing Ohno didn't seem to be able to look at him either.
Ohno cleared his throat. "Besides," he mumbled. "It's still raining outside and you would just get wet all over again."
"You're right," Nino nodded and smiled so widely that it felt like his face would rip. "And because you're my senior, you can help me with my homework!"
~
They had managed to keep a decent conversation going for the whole time they had been eating, but now, after starting their homework, they had again slipped into silence. Neither of them had mentioned anything about the kiss, though Nino knew they were both still thinking about it, because the silence wasn't very comfortable. Nino had a hard time concentrating on his biology textbook and Ohno kept fidgeting in his seat, obviously not getting far in his math problems.
Nino sighed and slammed his book shut. "You know what? I-"
"Please don't fight because of me again," Ohno interrupted him, his voice soft, barely audible. "You might get seriously injured. Or the school might find out and you'd get into trouble."
"What? So I should just let those idiots beat you up?" Nino snapped. Did Ohno really think that he could leave him to deal with this alone? Did he really think that he was that selfish? Why couldn't Ohno see that all he was trying to do was to protect him? There was no way he could let them hurt him ever again.
"I can take care of myself," Ohno said, sounding a bit sour.
"Yeah, right," Nino snorted. "I bet you'd just prefer that it was Sakurai Sho and not me, who did all the rescuing."
Ohno's head snapped up and Nino was stunned when he saw the look in his eyes. Ohno was angry, it was easy to tell. It shocked Nino since he had thought it was almost impossible to get Ohno mad. The boy seemed so meek most of the time. He hadn't wanted to bring Sho up with Ohno at all. He had planned to avoid that subject completely.
"I want you to understand something," Ohno said coldly. His tone made Nino wince. There was steel in it, unexpected harshness that made the whole thing so much more horrible. "I don't need anyone to rescue me. I don't need yours or Sho's help. I've been dealing with those guys for years now and I'm still not broken."
Yes you are, Nino thought, remembering the feel of Ohno's hand in his that day when they had hid in the store, that day when they had gone to buy Ohno's sketchbook. He remembered how Ohno had shivered next to him and how much he had wanted to hug him close and make it all go away. He didn't say anything. Ohno still looked furious.
"But at least Sho never gets into fights when he helps me and he doesn't make me feel guilty and worried."
They stared at each other for a while. Nino didn't say anything. He was feeling rejected and awful and he knew Ohno was right. The look in Ohno's eyes remained intense, irritated and cold and Nino kept very still, his eyes flickering from Ohno's eyes to the way his lips were set and to how his eyebrows creased together. His thoughts were running in stupid, unwanted and inappropriate loops and his heart was beating too fast. He didn't remember if it had slowed back to normal at all after they had arrived at Ohno's place.
He didn't have any comebacks for Ohno.
"I'm sorry..." Nino muttered. He had a hunch that this wasn't only about the brawl or his irresponsible behaviour. He should apologize properly. Maybe if he explained, Ohno wouldn't hate him. "I'm sorry I kissed you." He resisted the urge to pout and just watched how Ohno's eyes gradually softened and the anger in them was slowly replaced with another feeling. What it was, Nino wasn't sure. It looked too much like pity, and Nino really didn't want to see that. "If you didn't want me to do it, you could have just said no. I honestly didn't want to upset you. But..." he added, his voice dropping even lower. He had nothing to lose at this point anyway, he could just go and say it. "But I really want to kiss you again and you should just say it now if you don't want me to. I'll leave you alone and we'll never talk about it again if you don't want to."
"No," Ohno said and Nino's shoulders slumped. He looked down, anywhere else than at Ohno. So, this was it. This was as far as he was allowed.
"You need to do it properly," Ohno said. Suddenly he was right there, so close to Nino that he could feel his breath on his skin. He reached out and grabbed Nino's shoulders, pulling him closer and pushing their lips together.
Ohno's fingers slid up Nino's neck and over Nino's bruise, the touch light and careful not to hurt, and then traced back down his jaw line and neck and into Nino's hair. He breathed out, surprised, and leaned into the kiss, opening his mouth. Ohno's hands locked behind his neck
Ohno smelled like the rain, fresh and cold and delicate. Nino pressed himself against Ohno, arms tightly around Ohno's head, and answered the kiss eagerly. Ohno sucked on Nino's lower lip and Nino could feel tongue and teeth and everything was so much better than he had ever imagined, even with the clashing teeth and wrong movements and awkward indecision that went with first kisses. He smiled into the kiss and he could feel Ohno's smile answering his.
The second try went a lot better. This was kissing. Intoxicating, dizzying, real kissing. Briefly, muddily, Nino wondered if he should try to make Ohno lose his temper more often.
Finally they broke the kiss, but Nino didn't move away or let go of Ohno. He felt slightly uncertain on his feet. It would have been too embarrassing to lose his balance just because of a kiss, so he continued to hold onto Ohno.
"Right," he finally said, pushing his cheek against Ohno's so that he didn't have to look him in the eye. "Properly." He cleared his throat. "I thought you were mad at me?"
Ohno muttered something that sounded like "idiot" to Nino, but he couldn't tell because Ohno tended to mumble and this time Ohno's mouth was also pressed against his shoulder, making things even more unclear. He was also uncertain if Ohno meant him or himself. Or both of them.
"I... I panicked," Nino confessed to Ohno, finally stepping away. He didn't know where to look. "They were going to hurt you, I saw it in their eyes, and I couldn't think of anything else. They wanted to hurt someone, it was better that they hurt me instead. And I was angry... your sketchbook, and the picture you drew of us was there... I couldn't think."
Ohno frowned, glancing at his sketchbook, but then he shook his head. "It doesn't matter," he said, his eyes flickering to the bruise on Nino's cheek. "I can always draw new pictures."
