04. He who values truth

Aiba had a friend. At first Nino wasn't sure how this had anything to do with him or why he had to know anything about this friend, but the more Aiba talked about him, the more he thought he understood. It wasn't that much about this one particular friend than it was about the fact that Aiba had friends. Aiba had people he liked and wanted to see regularly and without even realizing it, Nino had been stopping Aiba from doing what he wanted. He had locked him in this museum of a house and hadn't even thought about how it would affect him.

Nino felt guilty. And he didn't like the feeling so he said yes when Aiba asked if he could bring his friend to meet Nino.

One rainy Thursday afternoon Aiba enthusiastically introduced Matsumoto Jun to Nino. He was tall and quiet and polite (and very pretty) and the complete opposite of Aiba. While Aiba was constantly moving, Jun stood still. Aiba was warm, Jun was cold. Aiba's face was open and friendly, easy to read. Jun's eyes were closed and his expression remained neutral. Nino wasn't exactly sure how these two could even be friends, but Aiba clearly liked Jun. And Nino was quickly learning that when Aiba liked someone, he would stick to them no matter what.

Nino really didn't want to like Jun.

But he did.

A very simple thing decided what Nino thought of Jun. He noticed how Jun's eyes softened every time he looked at Aiba. And when he smiled, his whole face changed. He turned from this cold and aloof person into someone who seemed to be suitable to be Aiba's friend. That was what made Nino like him and trust him when he had barely known the guy for half an hour. Nino was pretty sure that his sudden and complete lack of common sense was all Aiba's fault. Aiba's constant presence in his life was clearly making him stupid too. He hadn't used to allow strangers into his house, not even if they were friends of his friends. He didn't know anything about this guy and still he had allowed him to come, just because Aiba had asked.

"I told Aiba to find someone who could teach him," Jun said to Nino. "And he found you. Thank you," he said, bowing, and there was real gratitude in his voice, like he was a father whose child Nino had just agreed to teach.

Nino nodded and looked away. Being thanked so sincerely was embarrassing. He caught Aiba's eye and when Aiba broke into a wide smile and gave him two thumbs up behind Jun's back he just rolled his eyes at him.

"I tried helping him at first, but I just don't know enough about what you do to be any real use," Jun said as he straightened himself. He brushed his bangs out of his face and Nino thought that he looked annoyed, like he should have known how to teach Aiba and disliked having to ask it from someone else.

"Who are you, exactly?" Nino asked when they were all sitting in the small living room. It was slightly messy because Aiba had decided to bring half of the library in there the night before and no one had had time to clean it up yet. Nino didn't mind. And if Jun was bothered by the mess, he was too polite to show it. "Normal people don't know anything about us. You have to be someone to know enough to even try to help someone like Aiba."

"He's a magician," Aiba said eagerly, obviously unable to keep it in anymore.

"No. I'm not, you idiot. I'm a mage," Jun told Aiba, smacking him lightly on the head. "I have to keep reminding you. Magicians are all frauds. Be glad that I'm a nice person who doesn't get offended easily."

Nino really liked this guy.

Aiba gave Jun a sceptical look and rubbed his head, like the smack had actually hurt him. "You're so cruel, Jun," he moaned. "And your rings hurt. I don't care if they are magical and for protection, take them off before you hit me."

Jun just smiled at Aiba and Nino had to turn his eyes away again. This guy, even if he was pretty cool, was also very embarrassing to watch. "I know a mage. Maybe you have heard of him?" Nino said, diverting Jun's attention away from Aiba. "Are you familiar with the Sakurai family?" He asked, watching Jun closely.

Jun's eyes widened for a second before he was able to pull himself back together again. "I have... heard stories," he said carefully.

"Oh, I'm sure they're all true," Nino grinned. "I've known Sho-chan since we were kids."

Jun just looked at him, obviously very interested but too afraid or too polite to ask more.

Nino changed the subject just to annoy him.

"Was there a reason you told Aiba to bring you here, or is this just a social visit?" he asked casually, leaning back in his chair. "I don't really trust your type. I shouldn't have even let you in, really."

"And I don't trust your type," Jun said. "I'm checking if you're good enough to teach Aiba. I've met a lot of Travellers."

Nino snorted, but he kept his tone casual and light. "And I've met a lot of mages. Most of them are arrogant and full of themselves."

"So have been all of the Travellers I've met."

"That just means that you keep the company of idiots and amateurs."

The corner of Jun's mouth twitched and for a second Nino thought that he was getting angry. Then he realized that Jun was barely stopping himself from grinning and he had to bite his tongue to stop himself from answering the smile.

"Aww," Aiba giggled. "You guys like each other." He draped his arm around Jun's shoulder. "See, Jun, I told you you'd like him. I was right, wasn't I? Wasn't I? Of course I was."
