first up America:

Matthew still remembers a time before any Europeans stepped onto his uncharted lands. The memories are vague, wisps of knowledge that he will run over and over again in his mind, an assurance that they won't disappear.

Times were simpler then. He could run alongside herds of bison, sweeping through the golden strands of wheat that stretched as far as he could see. At times, he would travel north and stare in awe at the aurora borealis. The vibrant colours swirled and danced with the stars that littered the dark night sky.

Back then, Alfred and him were one yet two. The borders between them were all but non-existent, with the exception of native tribe land divides. Everything about Alfred captivated Matthew--Alfred's almost identical appearance, his personality. He wasn't one to hide his feeling. They were always displayed on his face. With one glance at him, Matthew could tell what his brother was feeling. Alfred's emotions radiated off of him and they were contagious.

When Alfred laughed, Matthew laughed along with him, their delighted voices merging into an incandescent melody.

When Alfred cried, Matthew held him, crying too. Sobs tore out of his mouth when Alfred cried, wracking his slight body. Matthew couldn't stand those sounds, clenching his jaw at every noise as silent tears fell from his cheeks.

Matthew still remembers trudging through the waist-high snow to meet Alfred, dripping wet and shivering. A women from the tribe he was staying with tried to dissuade him from going but he wouldn't relent and all she could do was bundle him up in fur, and supply him with some pemmican.

Alfred was at the meeting spot and Matthew latched onto him for warmth. They laughed at the sorry state they were in--hair plastered to their faces, blue lips quivering with cold. Not that Matthew minded all that much. Being with Alfred was worth the trouble.

Sometimes, they would just sit beside each other, relishing each other's comforting presence, their fingers intertwined. Alfred's scent would wash over Matthew. He had always loved his twin's calming smell, and would often bury his face into Alfred's shoulder and sigh.
Matthew still remembers those times, and as he looks at Alfred during the world meetings, Matthew can't help but wonder if his brother does too.
