If you are listening to melancholic songs, you can always turn them off.  What do you do when they're on repeat mode inside your head?

Play something else over it. Like Lady Gaga.

Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah!
Roma-Roma-ma-ah!
Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!
Want your bad romance

I was also going to suggest playing something over it.
Matchbox 20?

But I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

how about some feel good tunes?

i turn to Blur sometimes:
GIRLS WHO ARE BOYS
WHO LIKE BOYS TO BE GIRLS
WHO DO BOYS LIKE THEY'RE GIRLS
WHO DO GIRLS LIKE THEY'RE BOYS
ALWAYS SHOULD BE SOMEONE YOU REALLY LOVE
(while marching around room with arm pumping action)

or Gozilla's Dare
You've got to press it on you
You just think it
That's what you do, baby
Hold it down, DARE
(this one not so much the lyrics but it was featured in one of Victoria's Secret's shows so if i need a pick-me up in the mornings when i feel like shit, i blast this and i strut to office like a supermodel)

Change the tune/pattern of thinking WILLFULLY whenever you notice yourself falling into "bad thoughts".

When that doesn't work...

You know what helped at my worst heart break - I bought and read Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore. I've never heard of him or his book, just picked it up by random, and it was life saver. It's twisted and a page turner and has nothing to do with love so it was the BEST distraction ever...gave me a lot of peace between moments of agnst till I felt better, if u know what i mean.

Hahahahahahaha!

Okay I'll keep Kafka On The Shore in mind when I next find myself at Kino. But then again, I already have tons of books to read that I haven't yet touched....

I'm not so sure about happy tunes, but everyone I know has "comfort music" or "comfort books" - they might not be necessarily happy, but take you into their own universe, which is very useful when your own is not appealing any more.

What really helps in the long run, is doing something new and challenging that requires your undivided attention. But it has to be new, concentrating on old stuff doesn't do the trick.

Oh man, does it help then that my comfort books are all my 101 flight manuals...?

Get ones for seaplanes - that will take care of the 2nd recommendation as well!

Problem is: a) no seaplanes to fly, b) no $ to fly said planes, c) I don't even know how to go about getting a seaplane rating in SG!
