Well, the statement didn't say hard landings are good either-in fact they stress the airframe and the landing gear-but a lot of people think that the further the opposite, the better, i.e. the softer the landing. That's not true. You need to feel the firm 'thump' of the wheels on the ground!
Trust me: it's better to have the plane break the undercarriage and burst a few tyres than to sail off the end of the runway!
