The Pupil

I'm watching The Pupil, the Channel 5 drama series, and I quite like it.  Watching it, I wonder what would my life have been like had I made choices differently and ended up in Law instead.  Although Aviation and flying is the great love of my life, if I had to name a secondary passion, it would be Law.  A lot of you don't know that one of the ( Read more... )

I understand how you feel! Still, you've had one major career change already!

Haha of course I'm not contemplating to change again (no way will I ever give this up anyway), just doing a little Sliding Doors thing lah.

Lawyer friends have commented that if The Pupil were true to life, we would be watching an hour's worth of photocopying and filing.

Hahahahaha from what I've heard from my friends, that is really very true.  But what did they say about the parts I like, like the snazzy black suits, intense courtroom exchanges (and, er... hot pupils, haha!)  Is that part at least true?

Haha my GP tutor (Mary Lim) actually suggested I do Law (or Arts) when I told her I was opting for Acc. Glad I didn't! I freakin' hated all the law modules I had to do in school!

You never know where life will take you next. But then again, opportunities are not entirely random. Because of your character you tend to steer them in a certain direction and move towards some broad goal.

Also, as they say, "we don't choose our roads; our roads choose us". That is, if you look at where you are to where you were, say, 10 years ago, there seems to be no other explanation.

And I think that being a lawyer is boring. Even being a criminal lawyer is boring in Singapore.

Well, 10 years ago if I had made a choice differently, I might have really ended up somewhere very different.

Heh, and yeah I guessed that it's greener on the other side, so if I were indeed a lawyer, I would probably be bored stiff instead of relishing scenes like the ones on The Pupil.

What I'm saying is that there might not be turning points in life as such. Sometimes life presents you with what you think is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity. But in fact, there are greater forces at work, so that single decision does not really matter. Have you chosen to do law, you might have gone along that track for a while, but would have eventually realised that you want something else... You know what I mean?

Over a short time horizon, a certain single action might seem like a bifurcation point, but over a longer time horizon, it would just be an aberration, because you would still end up in the same place regardless of the route you have chosen.
