Chars has asked me if I responded to Snob* about taste in books/movies/games/etc., but I don't really think it's worth it. Taste is so personal, even if misguided, and there's no real harm in letting someone even like Snob be snobbish about that, until it gets into violent racist or homophobic bigotry or that. Or maybe it's metaphysical thinking. Like you have a pocket full of change and you have four coins on the table. You remove the four coins on the table and put them in your pocket. Then you get out 8 coins and put them on the table.

Removed four. Left eight.

I forgot to mention the "Use paper and pencil for this" part of the riddle, but that's sort of secondary.

The book answer is to ignore the pencil, though, and take the paper in your hand. Tear off each of the four corners. Now there are eight corners remaining.

My issue is with the tearing, specifically, since it doesn't really leave 'corners' in doing so--tearing paper is almost always natty. Even cutting with scissors has the potential to be messy, or you could cut rounded bevels and leave no corners at all.
