If it wasn't evident, I like to chronicle things of interest, but my biggest problem is doing so in a manner that's easy to manage and navigate. Haha, an error in my post [though it didn't affect the riddle], and--upon double-checking the answer--a repeat riddle in the same book =p Yay, this sucks!

I'm going to actually have to use the matchsticks for this answer, the underscore and pipe aren't the same size... ¬_¬

Arrange the matches into a triangle, and they surround six square units. However, if you push the lower right matches inward, they will remove two square units from the enclosed area.
