Our minivan gave awful transmission trouble; it was 15 years old at its 'death', when the engine could no longer be repaired, due to a cracked block. A friend told me that our expenses, amortized over the time we had it, weren't actually too bad. I dunno, if you're not going to like driving the minivan, then the crossover itself sounds like a compromise. Could you get one and then trade up later on? *waves banner of cheer*

If there's room in your budget, maybe you could lease/rent a minivan for a little while & see if it's actually that bad? Otherwise, don't buy something you hate that you're going to be stuck with for years.

PS for what it's worth our old minivan (granted this was like 20 years ago) also died of transmission troubles. Maybe look into reliability/repair costs on both as a factor as well?
