Alphonse had often watched his brother try to scrub the old sheets, long after the two of them had moved in. There was no removal of the stuff, no, nor was there the unceremonious dumping that he would do with the rest of the laundry, sticking it on Al's bed and leaving it at that, thank you. No, that was just for the new laundry, the stuff that they had bought after the fact, long after he had thrown the rest of the old linens away.
Except those old sheets. That jacket and those sheets had always stayed in the same spot, right next to his bed, folded neatly and never leaving their place.
That is, until Edward would pull them out again and try to give them another scrub. His prosthetics would wear, his fingers would turn red, but never would he stop until he was satisfied with his work, looking upon the now fresh garment with pride.
...
Until he gave the soon-to-be-dry things a sniff.
Then he would hold onto them, growling German profanities and speaking a name that Al had the sinking feeling wasn't his own.
