I'm contemplating getting a sewing machine, but whenever I go take a look in the sewing machine aisle, my eyes glaze over and my mind screams "butbutbut, I dunno know what I need!!". I figured this would be the perfect place to get recommendations from all my artsy craftsy friends on which machine I should invest in, what to look for etc. I'm

My sewing machine is a really cheap thing that Jason stole from his mom, I think, so I really do not have much advice for you. I would assume most machines have options for different sized needles, and maybe even different "feet" for things like button-holes, and different types of stitches (zig-zags, farther spaced, etc), but if not, looking for one that does would be my only real advice. For simple skirts and scrubs you won't need anything too fancy. Good luck!
