Originally it was what I could get my hands on, and when I was fresh-faced and young, it didn't drain me to do so (or I didn't notice the drain at all). I found that there were positive aspects in the away-from-general-populace and, often, lighter general workload. I'll miss those bits.
Ultimately, though, as I get older, and the longer I was on nights, the less and less of a social life I had/have, the more I miss actually spending time with people whose company I enjoy, and the harder it is to flip my schedule twice a week in order to make active, functional use of my days off. And losing the time it takes to flip the schedule cuts into my time off.
So! We'll give this swing shift thing a try, and see if it doesn't drive me screaming over the final remaining edge of hating IT.
