I suppose the next question is what was going through the mother's head when she did that? I mean, did God tell her to do it? Did she "see" something on the baby's arms?

well, you know me - I'm fascinated by all things psychotic and deranged and this even made me feel icky...It's just so sick and so sad. Clearly, people who are of their right mind do not do things like this to their babies...and yet child services deemed her fit previously...you gotta think that there were some red flags someone should have seen. I mean, yeah, she could've had a sudden psychotic break , but considering the previous event - I'm more inclined to believe that someone somewhere missed/ignored something. Which makes this sick, sad , and worst of all, probably preventable.
Post partum depression - put that on my list of ever growing reasons not to procreate!

I've seen some people child services deemed fit to parent and it's a sad, pathetic story. It makes you wonder what criteria they're going by (like, Mother didn't actually have the needle hanging from her arm when child services person stopped by)

There's medication for post partum depression, one (or those around the mother) just has to be willing to admit that they need it.

my motherinlaw told me a story about the first legal child abuse case the other night. The neighbors called the police cos they new the little girl was just being tortured. the police said that they dont get involved in domestic disputes- so the neighbors called what was basicly the humane society and told them about a mammal that was being abused. they came and took the girl as a mistreated animal. there were no charges filed against the parents but the child was taken and given to another family.
I thought it was interesting to see part of how that process started. But also, even though they make a lot of mistakes i know that protective services have a really hard job with a lot of legal and moral complications and i appreciate what they do accomplish.

I didn't really mean that as a condemnation of child protection services as a whole - cuz you're right they do have an incredibly hard (almsot impossible) job...I suppose they're kinda like relationships - you hardly ever hear the success stories, the happy endings - you just always hear the horror stories. But I just think that in case like this, someone had to drop the ball somewhere along the way - whether it was a particular worker or the system as a whole. Truthfully, stuff like this is probably more due the system as a whole

O i didnt mean to imply that you were condemning everyone. But your right. it does seem unlikely that she showed no worning signs.

its such a difficult topic to hold a firm belief about. I know that if something is repressed in someone it can be impossible for them to see it.
anyway there have to be specific reason for them to take someones children. Even if they know that things arent exactly right there has to be specific symptoms. It is, i think, your right, more due to the system as a whole. But since there is no flawless sign - i think people are stuck with the decision.. which is worse. to steal the children of healthy parents or to allow abuse from unhealthy ones.
