So I'm thinking about starting a part-time cake business.  But I might be insane, because I don't know how to run a business.  I don't even know if people want to pay for good cakes.  There is a business in town called Cakes for You and these girls live one block away from me- that might be weird for competitive business.  I put a bid on a cake for ( Read more... )

I think that even though you have neighbours nearby doing the same thing, you'd be safe to assume you could do the same in a college town. I don't know what to say regarding a business, because all the business knowledge I have revolves around film work, but I'd think it should be easy enough to dive into where cakes are concerned! I can help you advertise...

My advice:

Don't undersell yourself. Find out how much cakes of the quality and detail you are planning on making cost from other professional cake shops, and price accordingly. It doesn't hurt to be cheaper than the competition, but don't be TOO much less; being too affordable will cause people to question your quality and will end up underselling your hard work.

Good point. I bid on one yesterday, keeping in mind how much Albertsons' used to charge (because I used to work there) but it was still going to cost a little more. I should go do a price comparison at Consumers, too. Thanks!
