The pic you are using as a banner at the top of each page is awesome. Ditto, I agree more pics of bones would be fine with the public and generally would be pretty fascinating to many.
A caption explaining the purpose of the ruler thingy that's in each pic indicating size might be helpful.
I agree that if someone has a problem with bones they're unlikely to be looking at your site!
With regards to the content I think it would be worth having seperate sections for lay people who maybe interested in talks / sessions or whatever but don't necessarily know archeological terminology?!
One other minor thing is that on the front page it should read throughout England and Wales not through out :-)
