Because you are all much cooler than I am...

I am currently looking for some clothing. I'm looking for...a lace top. Probably black. A victorian-era-esque skirt. A dark-ish color...black, grey, eggplant, burgundy....I'm pretty flexible here. A corset. the color here can also be flexible, depending on the skirt I find. And, maybe some bloomers. just for fun. The downside, is that I need these ( Read more... )

If you want a "real" corset - Pendragon Costumes. Great corsets, great fit, and they're great people. http://www.pendragoncostumes.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=pendragon&Product_Code=anne_corset&Category_Code=anne_boleyn. I own three Anne Boleyn Corsets and wouldn't part with them for the world.

I wish my mom had her shit together, she could be doing costumes for money AND getting rid of her fabrics. As it is, I can't help much because of all the teaching madness.

Good luck!

I think I will probably spend most on the corset. I don't see me wearing it every day, but I'd like it to be nice. I've found a couple online, but I'm such a tactile person, I wanna touch it before I buy it. If I can't do that, I ask for guidance. Thanks for the link. I'll check them out tonight.

I would have loved to have had your Mom make something. I've found a skirt and a top. The skirt will have to be modified, it's pretty simple, so I'm going to try to add a bustle at the back to make it more 'victorian'. Her clothes are pretty fussy even for being dirt poor. I found a costume online, and missed bidding for it. Someone else did the buy it now thing. *curses*

Pendragon doesn't have any Victorian corsets, but the Anne Boleyn corset can be made in a fabric that is Victorian enough to work. (They can make it with little epolets (sp?) at the bottom which is more fitting for the period.)

When it comes to chubby sizes like ours, it's hard to find a Victorian corset that's worth the money. When I was shopping around for one the cheapest I found was about $120 and it wasn't remotely well designed or functional. The Anne Boleyn corsets through Pendragon cost me $65 each, (one was $75 because I bought it at fair two years ago) and I've worn them each multiple times and they're all still "like new".

If you decide to order through Pendragon - I'll give you Nicole's email, she's the girl you want to speak to! :)

and, I was worried about the plus size issue. Many people can make perfectly fine corsets if the wearer is a size 2.

_Some_ of us -- the true fanatics -- use Amazon.co.uk and have already read _Nation_.

No spoilers, but, if you're interested, Harper Collins has a big excerpt here [the first 80 pages or so]:

Yes. I loved it.

Also it made me cry. _The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents_ made me cry, too.
